I would say there is an element of what is difficult for the individual player. I play lots of instruments fairly badly. I know that if I practiced really well and hard I would be able to get my trombone, recorder, flute, clarinet, sax and oboe playing up to something respectable. Probably pass an initial performance diploma in one or two if I concentrated on them. On the other hand, I played violin for a good 6 years and never got anywhere. Totally defeated me. Could never get correct bowing action, make a decent sound or anything. Just can't do it. Same for piano, It would probably take me about three years to get to grade two or three (ABRSM) and I don't think I would ever get any higher, and given that I can already read treble and bass clef and have done quite a bit of theory so the scales and chords aren't a total mystery I think that shows the piano is not for me. So to sum up, if I can't blow down it, it somehow doesn't make music for me. That's the way my brain works. And I think that many people find the same. They are either in one camp or the other when it comes to the families of instruments that they can play.
