I just had one of my students by a Fox 333, an instrument that cannot be matched at around $2000 new. I would look for a 333 new or slightly used depending on your budget. At the time Nora Post (www.norapost.com) was offering very competitive prices for this model.
Perhaps even more important than a good oboe is a good oboe teacher. With an instrument as individual as the oboe, it is best for a student to have a teacher whose primary instrument is oboe. Oboe is frustrating to learn on your own, and the advise given by most band directors is musically helpful, but not always pertinent to the oboist.
