My 10 year old just started oboe in band at school (not marching) She is currently using a school oboe, a buffet (I don't know the specific model). I am thinking about purchasing an instrument at the end of the school year if it seems that she would like to continue with band. I would like to buy something that would at least carry her through high school, if she is still interested in playing. If she quits, I'd like to get some of my money back for the instrument by selling it.
Her teacher is an accomplished high school student, which seems to be working fine for now. The band director is not very knowledgeable about double reeds, so I don't have a lot of places to turn for advice. So far I've been told that Loree is the standard and I should get that. I don't really know if I want to do that. There seem to be a lot of options around. Plus, I'm not sure that I want an all wood instrument at this point. There seem to be some "high end" plastic models that would not have all the maintenance. For example, the Fox 300 seems to go for about $3500. Since I don't have a crystal ball to tell me how serious or acccomplished my daughter will become, what would more experienced people recommend? Will I regret it if I don't get a Loree? What is a good oboe in the 3-4000 range for a young player?
