 Rocking versus sliding the half hole

Before I change what I think is a good habit, I'd love to hear your opinions:

I have been rocking my index finger on the half hole in the six months I've been playing this instrument with good results.

My teacher is now telling me I should be *sliding* my finger as opposed to rocking it.

I'd like to hear what you experienced oboists are doing on the half hole.
