How strange !

I personally find that I can tell the orchestra from the sound of the oboes. Often I hear the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and can tell it is them by the distinct sound of Douglas Boyd. Malcolm Messiter, Heinz Holliger, Albrecht Mayer and other well accomplished oboists do too have a rather unique sound. Some have said to me that I have a sound they have never heard before and often can tell it is me when they hear recordings of youth orchestras I have been in. I feel that we have very different sounds nowadays...

I find it odd that I disagree so strongly...!

I was listening to the new CD on http://www.oboeclassics.com/ of historical oboe sounds 1903-1954(?) and apart from that of Leon Goossens, I find it very hard to distinguish the difference between each oboist--of the sounds themselves; not so much the character of the playing. See for yourself, if you may!
