Yet another apology for the way I came across. I was not clear in expressing that I did not necessarily share in the view of Mack of any of the other people in the camp. Should have used quotes! As an old man he is very set in his ways and is rather blunt in expressing his views.
Actually, I was very impressed by the principal of the London Philharmonic when I heard him/her take a crack at the solo in the second movement of Vaughn Williams 8th Symphony. It was incredible the way that the player handled a note well into the high register without allowing the pitch to go really funky and all while keeping a decent tone. By no means am I trashing any one school of oboe teaching. I find it rediculous that oboe players cannot have the same freedom in crossing the borders as violin players.
I really think that a lot of the problem and difference lies in the way that youth are educated. In high school there is an enormous amount of pressure to make it into all sorts of honor bands, and due to the difficulty of the oboe compared to the other instruments, there is also the expectation that a beginning oboist should have a tone that does not stick out. As a result a good deal of the people who survive these years end up with a really reserved tone that is deviod of faults but also of color.
