I do agree that John Mack's oboe playing is very rserved, but I wonder if your exposure to his playing is from the couple of solo CD's on the market? Those recordings are a bit stuffy and boring and again I agree that his playing lacks intensity; however I think John Mack's greatest legacy is his orchestral playing. I am a biased yes as a North American oboist. His tone is polished and dark with sufficient ring, wonderful intonation and an understated musicality which seems to be just right in the orchestra.
I think we are comparing apples to oranges as the saying goes. As a soloist Mr. Mack leaves much to be desired, but as an orchestral player I think his playing is quite lovely.
Your statement about the United States is my feeling about Europe. I think that there are just as many differing schools of oboe playing in Europe that I would be very wary of calling one player better than the rest. I must admit that I am not familliar with all of the oboists that you mentioned but I find that Holliger, Bourge and Indermule too light and French for my taste and really represent the august school of Pierlot. I feel that Yeon-Hee Kwak sounds a little inflexible to my ears and can sound a little brittle. Leleux I think sounds wonderful.
I would add that no European oboist has really made a significant impact on the American school of oboe playing since Tabuteau essentially created a new oboe sound and style.
