It's very interesting to note popular players...
Living in Australia one is not accustomed to hearing much of the American School of Playing- the only players really known are Thomas Stacy's amazing input to the cor Anglais, Stephen Taylor's Orpheus recrdings and Alex Klein. However I have to say after hearing and working with Alex Klein last year he is simply one of the most phenomenal players I have ever heard!
I agree too that Maurice Bourge and Leleux are incredible but I have recently heard Jacques Thys in a recital here in Sydney and he was fabulous too. Unfortunately Goussens (Leon) has already passed on but there are recordings of his on the Pearl Label.
In terms of other countries Nicholas Daniel is a very unique player at present as he is not limited by the conventional style. A British player he has a very individual style and incidently I believe was the first British player to be appointed to an American University- Indiana.
In Australia the most influential player is undoubtedly Diana Doherty. She is a bit younger than Alex Klein and full of vitality and will make her debut with the New York Philharmonic in February 2005 playing the US Premiere of the Ross Edwards Concerto (written for her) so watch out for her in New York City!
She oddly enough beat Leleux at the Prague Competition 1995 playing the Martinu Concerto and in the same year won the New York Concert Artists Audition- She is utterly inspirational to all oboists here and one should hope elsewhere.
I really am looking forward to the IDRS Conference to be held in Melbourne this year where I imagine some more outstanding players will emerge from many countries.
