Thanks for the tips on adjusting a too-soft, sharp reed.
I used your suggestions to very good effect on all three of the reeds that I had which fit this description. Two were real screamers to start with, and one wouldn't play at all.
That one had the overlap from h*ll. Once I got it nudged into alignment and convinced the sides to seal, it has turned out to be not a bad reed at all. At least, it was playable today. Tomorrow, we shall see.
The other two just sounded really thin and screamy. I hadn't thought to look at their spines, because both of the folks who made these (two different makers) usually leave great spines. But . . . lo and behold, these were spineless little creatures (isn't there some sort of biological classification term for creatures without spines?).
So, I more or less created a spine by deepening the windows, and that brought the pitch down enough that I could clip the tips and then rework them a little. Both of the reeds are now at least acceptable to me, and one of them feels (and sounds) like it is going to be really good.
Three for three is a lot better than I had any right to hope for -- thanks a million!
Susan
