The thought of that twenty bucks rankled, so I finally "had at it" this morning, and managed to at least get it up to "adequate" speed. I cut off some of the tip, about an eyelash as Suzan suggested, which had the effect of immediately silencing it totally, and then basically hacked away at it in exasperation until it would play again. It's not going to be my first choice reed when I play Carnegie Hall, but at least it's not a total waste. Thanks to all for the advice.

I love this place.
