Craig --
I have done pretty much what you describe (lives 1, 2, and 3) with reeds from time to time, and have been surprised at the good results. The reed I used for "Oliver" was one of those, and it really performed well.
But I've generally only done this with reeds that weren't playing particularly well in life 1, mostly because they needed more scraping (very stuffy, flat-tending, with thickish tips) and more time to settle in between scrapings than the maker had given them.
I've got one right now, though, that was too light for my tastes to start with -- very enthusiastically scraped down by its maker, with a well-shaped but very thin tip. It was also tending significantly toward sharpness from the get-go. Do you suppose there is any hope for using the technique you describe to get my $$ worth out of this tender-hearted little reed, or is it just doomed to become sharper and sharper as I tweak it?
