Thanks for the input, all. Overall, it sounds like more advanced reedmaking skills than I possess would be required to salvage my whistling reed, so I'll just file it away in the "Learning Experience" box.
I'm mostly sorry the reedmaker didn't sound like she'd be amenable to negotiation, as in "sending me a replacement reed". Other than the whistle, it wasn't a bad reed, and if I had liked her "Student" reed, I'd have been interested in her "normal" reeds, too. So I guess she kinda did herself out of a customer by foisting off a second-rate, "didn't really work" reed as a "student" reed on a customer.
