If you are in the general LA area, it seems to me you could certainly find at least a college student who wants to teach some oboe over the summer.

Given the concerns you stated above, and the fact that you are still pretty young, I really think lessons would be the way to go. As my current teacher says (repeatedly), "It's easier to establish good habits than to break bad habits." Without a teacher, you might already be developing some bad habits, so it's time to nip those in the bud, and get you working in a right direction.
