I'm not qualifying myself as a "good" player, exactly, but I will tell you that my teacher says an oboist is (should be) constantly making minute embouchure adjustments throughout the range of the instrument. The embouchure is more "rolled out" and open on the lower tones than on the higher tones.
The middle "C" that you are struggling with is a notoriously nasty note on the oboe (as is, in my experience, the "B" right below it). Look where it is on the instrument -- way up at the top of the tube. Resonance is just guaranteed to be thinner there than on the tones with more fingers down.
I suspect you are correct in identifying your embouchure as the culprit. I find that keeping a round, un-biting embouchure is the key to doing just about everything right. It takes time to get this to develop, so be patient, but persistent (geez, I sound like my teacher!) I've been working at it for almost three years now, and it's still not the way I want it all the time. (But sometimes it is -- that's the good news!).
And by the way, 35 is YOUNG. There are several of us on this board who started the oboe after age 55.
Sounds to me like you are right on schedule.
