p.12 #6 (lots of fun now i'm able to pickup the pace)

Agreed. I found #7 on his page to be “fun” too. Did you? This is the one my teacher said, “Don’t just toot the notes, make them sound good.” He played it for me and made me redo that one the next lesson until it sound “pretty.” It sounded better but not quite pretty then.

p.13 #4 & #5 (#2 nice as legato contrast)

Yikes. I found #5 to be very difficult. I skipped it at first, went on to pages past, but then felt guilty and worked on it for a week until I mastered it. Good thing because my teacher made me play it for him. LOL! :-) No more skipping stuff for me...gotta master it first.

p.14 #6 (took me ages to get my fingers co-ordi nated on that one)

I hear you! Did your teacher make you do #3 on this page real fast? Mine did and he still makes me play it and expects me to get faster even still! He calls this “arpeggio” something or other....

p.15 #6 (still working on it, it should be easy but it isn't {:-]

I hear you. It’s not an especially fun piece. I think what makes it hard is the embouchure changes needed from register to register.

p.16 #5 (what a fun piece of Mozart, easy to start, infernal to finish)

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. This is the one my teacher expects me to play perfectly next lesson on the 30th of this month. I played it decent last lesson but he marked my book all up and said “crescendo here diminuendo here...make it sound beautiful like an opera lady singing.” Ha! Funny thing is, I think I tensed up on this so much, my teeth cut into my upper lip and now I’m having to chill out on this. Guess I need to relax.... It is sounding better nonetheless...and once you get the hang of using your abs to breathe, those highs are a piece of cake! I realize now how important it is to breath from below and “squeeze” air out. It makes this instrument so much more comfortable.

Interestingly, this is also the song that caused me to post my original post for help on the “C” sounding bad. Everything I hit the C’s I cringed. That C is coming out better these days and I’m still using the same fingering (two index fingers only).

p.18 #5 (now that i can do it allegro rather than andante)

That one was easy to learn, wasn’t it? I haven’t tried it real fast yet.

p.19 #3 i'm working on full length version found in Jay Arnold's solo book
it has an A major section as well, with repeats, lots of possibilities for subtle interpretive expression.

I’m learning this one, too, now actually. Very pretty, isn’t it? Also easy to play and I like that it has quite a few low tones in it...would love to see the long version!

Further along, the G min studies p.21 sound lovely to me

Can’t wait to do this one! I want to play melancholy songs already! This instrument is meant to sound sad, not happy. HAHAHAHA! This one is in my very near future, can’t wait.

p.22 #7 has a misprinted extra bar in it ... can you find it?

Thanks for the warning. Actually this book has a few misprints surprisingly. You’d think having come from ‘40s they’d fix it by now. Hmmm???

p.24 & 25 4 flats still a struggle for me, but getting closer ...

We shall see...that’s a couple weeks way for me.

In my third month, I still am needing to work on breathing...(I’m not doing it enough). I am trying to take smaller planned breaths more frequently and time them correctly. Embouchure is getting strong and I’m able to make that “oboe sound” finally! I am thrilled. I’m still hesitating on E’s and F’s for some reason...their placement on the staff or something. It will become second nature before long I’m sure.

This instrument is absolutely fun.... Thanks for kindly for your input, VOBOE.
