I fell in love with Gordon Hunt's playing when I heard him play the Adagio from Albinoni Op. 9 No. 2 at the consecration of the wedding of Charles and Camilla. His CD, "Elevazione" is a winner -- especially the title track, which is a transcription of an organ work. Wish I had the score!

The only Nicholas Daniel I have ever heard is the CD entitled "Five Italian Oboe Concertos", on the Helios label. He has the most phenomenal technical fluidity I have ever heard -- makes Holliger sound poky -- and I am in awe all over again every time I hear this CD.

I believe Daniel was teaching in the U.S. for a while (at Indiana U.?), but did not stay here long. My "source" told me that the disparity between the way American and English oboes are built created difficulties for him in teaching here. Perhaps he is not the mellowest oboist, but his technical skills are just amazing, and for my money, fun to listen to.

A recent IDRS-L thread about instruments-of-choice suggests that the Howarths are gaining a substantial foothold in the U.S. market. I presume these are not thumb-plate oboes, but are made for the American market?
