Seems like everyone in the Australiasia and South East Asia region recommend K Ges. Me too!

Leon Goosens (old school of course) i am sure many of us know played on a superbly light Loree and often complained about the oboes of today getting heavier and heavier. I think it is more to the reed....He also used a rather light reed in today's standards.

The Berlin Phil players hold the oboe up quite high to compensate for how they form their embouchure as so from what i was told. They have a beautiful warm tone but i suspect their reeds are so difficult to play that they do not exhibit much dynamic flexibility, and i have just heard an oboe d amore player in the BPO with Karajan in the 198x's performing Bach's Magnificat and it was evident that he was struggling with one of the phrases where he was unable to slur to a rather low note. But in one other movement, 6 oboes (YES 6!) played a perfect unison part throughout and it was absolutely amazing!

And i also noticed English players often emphasized a lot about the placement of the reed on the BOTTOM lip. Leon Goosens mentioned about it in his book, and i was also given a class by a close friend of Evelyn Rothwell and she too emphasized about how the lower lip should act as the 'bed' for the reed. Maybe this also contributes to the English sound?

The extra thickness the thumbplate adds to the body joint is definitely more comfortable, and it's a rolling movement to open the back 8ve key - like on a sax."

Makes me want to try a thumbplate system now!
