Hi, I have a Howarth S5. I bought it second hand but was originally made in 1995. I dont think it is "bright", I think it has a beautiful mellow sound. I like the more mellow sound. It is easier to make a mellow oboe sound bright but more difficult to get a bright instrument to sound mellow when required. I use K Gee reeds (Med, short, wired) which suits my playing and the oboe. When i brought it i compared it to a new borrowed Howarth S45 and thought that the S5 was far more responsive, with easy key work with good intonation. I cannot compare it to any other quality instrument brands as this is my first purchase and previously played on rental instruments. I was lucky and found really great oboe first time. It was just standing quietly in the corner of a music shop.

(From New Zealand where any oboe is expensive and good ones rare.)
