I know Holliger and Bourge aren't to everyone's tastes, they probably represent one of the many extreme examples of their art (of which there are too numerous to mention) and I owe my career to them.

I know Ncholas Daniel is a great player and makes a great sound (if that's the sound you like), but in my opinion his playing is too reserved and polite for my liking.

But there are some British players that I can't stand, not only oboists but certain flute, clarinet and bassoon players that exhibit the same mannerisms - strange fps, bulging their tone (every note being this shape - <>) and breathing in funny places and having a thin, quacky tone that has no real sense of substance, support or urgency, and vibrato is used too much as an added extra element instead of being part of their tone.

I also like the full, dark robust sound as well, it's difficult being torn in every direction by all these great influences of oboe playing styles that it's hard to pin a particular sound down that I'd like to recreate - each different style has it's place, some work across the board and some don't.

I can understand why my teacher is suffering with arthritis as her (1974) Marigaux weighs a ton, and is very bell heavy compared to mine.

OboeNZ, is the serial number on your S5 around the 45Ox mark? If it is, then it was made at the same time as mine.
