I think the 'English' sound is more down to the players than the make of oboe they use - Nicholas Daniel plays a Loree and he definitely has an English sound. I'm sure if Heinz Holliger picked up an XL he'd still sound the same as he does on his Rigoutats.

And a lot of UK players like Marigaux oboes, but they still retain the 'English' sound.

vboboe, I can't think of any other reliable sources for used Howarth oboes online apart from Howarth or Myatt, but whenever you're visiting the UK again I'm sure you should be able to pick one up and take it back in your hand luggage.

One person I know of in Canada (though he's from Bulgaria and now in Montreal, but that's miles away from Calgary) is Dimitri Jordanov who plays a Howarth S5 (a blackwood one, and made at the same time as my kingwood one as the serial numbers are very close) - I think he's importing Howarths into Canada.
