I had the good fortune of playing on a few Boehm-system (sax-fingered) oboes. All of them, as I suspected before I tried them, sounded loud and strident, and wouldn't be suitable for concert hall use.
By enlarging the tone hole, the tone of an instrument will become brighter. Flutes were inherently soft, so applying the Boehm system to them made them closer in loudness to oboes. The same system applied to oboes, however, merely made them sound strident.
Learning the oboe is indeed complicated, and there may be point to be made to learn it one part at a time (embouchure, then fingering).
