Exactly, Chris P! I'm just trying to sort out whether the derision is based on tradition ("This is the way I learned it, so you should be tortured in the same way") or something else.

Ian makes a very good point that these horns may not play very well (I've heard that before). That said, there are plenty of conservatory system oboes that don't play well either! So let's not entirely blame the fingering system.

So, does the sax fingering system just not work for oboe? Has it just not been updated (since the 1920s when these odd instruments were mostly created) and improved? Or is the oboe community rejecting it out of tradition?

As a clarinet/sax guy, I'm genuinely trying to understand.....and I just want to noodle around on oboe a bit....is that so wrong?
