If you think about it, a soprano sax is essentially an oboe and they work incredibly well. So if that's the case, why should it not be possible to make a narrow bore and double reed version of one? They have - Sarrusophones and Rothphones are just that, but pitched in Bb.

But with some research and development, I can't honestly see why it shouldn't be feasible to make a successful oboe with saxophone fingering. There have been many of them built in the past.

As for it being a 'shortcut' or 'cheating', I don't honestly see why it is. I mentioned a similar thing over on SOTW and the mere idea of it was shot down in flames by purists.

I just wish the oboe world was more open to new ideas instead of being so anally retentive. It's already deemed radical for suggesting playing oboes made by companies other than Loree, but to mention playing an oboe with a different and far more logical fingering system, then that's seen as a total outrage.
