You are at a turning point in your life, and it is worthwhile for you to sit down and carefully consider all your options.
One of the options is a performance major at a top school, apprenticeship with a famous teacher/soloist, acceptance to a major orchestra and a lifelong career as a musician.
What are your other options? What other careers have you considered? I ask this not in order to discourage, but to encourage you to broaden your horizons and see a larger picture.
There are plenty of oboists who start businesses; making (say) gougers and other tools  , selling cane and reed-making equipment, teaching oboe, instrument manufacture and repair, writing books, etc. There are many, many options out there for trained oboists who wish to branch out.
I can only give myself as an example of someone who never took the pro-player route. I studied engineering and enjoy a happy career, where my employer provides me with the latest tools
Do I regret never having taken the pro-musician route? Sometimes - but not often.
