 College and the freshman performance major

This morning my parents and I really sat down and looked at colleges. I have 2 that I feel very confident that I can get into, 2 that are a bit of a stretch but I still really want to apply to, and 2 that are complete dream schools.

The list is:
SJSU
ASU
UCLA
BU
New England Conservatory
Curtis Institute of Music

I've been looking around for the requirements for performance majors and the one I'm nervous about are the auditions.

What advise can you give about auditions in general, when auditioning does it have to be memorized, and do I pick a few contrasting pieces/composers/era ect. and use those two as my audition pieces for all the schools I'm applying to or do I choose 3-5 pieces and vary my auditions from school to school?

Also any tips for good recording devices/microphones? I'm not sure if I would be able to visit all the schools on the east coast and would then have to send in a recording.
