I noticed u are in Los Gatos, CA. You can get a pretty decent 8 track recorder from Guitar Center on Winchester in San Jose, which is near you. They also carry used equipment, which should be enough for what you are trying to do.
In my other life, I used to play heavy metal lead guitar and was really into recording some of the rock ballads that I wrote. I have tried using the computer recording methods and turned out this was a more expensive approach. Sound quality often didnt do justice doing it this way. Going the old fashion mic and 8 track and finding an accoustically suitable room is what I would do.
You know, HautboisJJ, has done some pretty decent recording. Perhaps, you can get him to tell you how he records ?
As far as schools, near you, there is San Francisco Conservatory. Huboboe, a gouge expert, is a SFC man, perhaps you can get his advise on how to handle admissions etc. He is on Meridian in SJ, I think 17 or 85 is accessible from Los Gatos. You can call westwinds or log on to his site:

and have a chat with him.
Of course, cjwright can tell you all about ASU.
Good Luck
