I play Covey oboes now, and even though made 20+ years apart using different designs, the classic Vs. traditional in their terms, the overall pitch and most note placements are very similar.
Even though they have some very different characteristics, I can use either in a pinch with the same reeds, and there is some comfort in that.
And I did ask Paul Covey to raise the F pitch on the first oboe before I bought it.
I watched as he did it, and tested it frequently as he progressed. Finally, he would not raise it any more unless I was going to buy it. I said yes, and he raised it a little more before I was happy.
Funny, the newer Covey plays that same F exactly like my old doctored one does in terms of pitch.
At the time, I was trying to get it to match my Loree for consistency.
Obviously, I got lucky, and if I pushed too far, Paul could have replaced the tone hole with an insert, which was one of his specialities.
