I have found another use for crowing (lips on the tread).
The other day I was going though my old reeds, 50 or so to see which are playable or not. (on a staple hunt) To my surprise there where reeds that are better than the ones I now was playing what luck.
Instead of soaking the reeds to save time I just went to a hard quick crow, and you should have seen the amount of dried stuff came out and it was not just one reed but about all the reeds the where dry.
So crowing dry or maybe wet could be used a quick internal reed clean thus get the stuff out of the reed not in to the oboe but on the nice living room carpet.
