My teacher, Ray Still, placed great emphasis on the proper C octaves crow. If a reed doesn't crow well, then there's something wrong someplace! Try lengthening the tip.
When squeezing a reed down because it's too open, be careful not to squeeze the back down, too much, as it's almost impossible to open it up again and it's a good idea to have the mandrel in the tube when squeezing.
Also, watch out for the reed that crows high, but plays low! You can be almost 100% sure that it is cracked! You may have have to look at it with a very bright light and a magnifying glass, but there is most likely a crack in it, somewhere.
I found that problem out, all by myself, and boy, did I feel good about it! Regards, Loree BF51
