One can crow the reed in three places; on the cane at the edge of the thread, on the thread, and on the very tip. It is my preferance that all three crow a C which does not change pitch with change of air pressure in the mouth. The crow on the thread can be a lower pitch but it should have a significant low frequency content and even sound a little raucous.
If this works, the reed can play well in tune at all registers when you play on the tip of the reed. All bets are off for tight or pinched lips. A B crow reed is simply too flat for me and needs to be brought back to a C crow, unless one wants to pinch all the time. Likewise, a C# crow reed will likely play sharp and should be modified. Thus, with good crows, one does not have to worry so much about playing in tune.
There are many opinions about crowing reeds but this works well for me. One can prepare good reeds by doing this without even trying them on the oboe.
