Cool thread! I really strive to make my reeds crow a perfect C. This enables me to play with a very relaxed embouchure and makes the oboe a breeze. If it crows three C's, AWESOME -- for me that means it will play nicely in all registers and won't be a reed that works for this song, but not for that one. A "wild" crow means the reed will be unstable and will need too much embouchure help. These tend to be raucous and waver in pitch...don't try to help these by biting as you'll just get tired. A dull crow means the reed is dying or close to death but often sounds REALLY nice when played in the oboe. These could be your best reeds but better watch out!
Crowing is everything to me! Gotta do it.
