great tip -- see, there's still a practical need for men's pocket hankies :-)
... sometimes when the cork of a new reed is a bit fatter than the reedwell, it's worthwhile to first grease and roll the bottom half of the cork firmly between warm fingers to compact the cork so it fits easily (but not so hard that you squeeze the metal tube out of shape!)
also, the first greasing should be liberal all over the cork so it fills the pores, then work it in as you roll it, but because it's still too slippery to get a grip on it to remove from reedwell, i recommend you do this the day * before * you use the reed for the first time, so the grease has enough time to dry and set up inside the cork
it's easier to slide a greased cork out when oboe's warm, cork grease gets thicker & stickier when it's cold
