some points of interest

the A is traditionally played for the benefit of the strings section, who use their A string as reference to tune their other strings

A is the fundamental note of the grand piano, bottom note is A, so the orchestra is tuning up to play with a piano, even if none is being used at the time

when there is a piano in the orchestra, OB1 usually has to ensure his/her tuner / tuning note is spot on with the piano
