Yep, 100% agreed. It's very easy to let timbre influence perception of pitch. To combat this tendency, I always have the tuner switched on when practicing. I don't constantly look at it, of course, but it's always there, so I can stop at any point along a phrase, hold out the note I'm on, and then glance back at the tuner to see if it's where I think it is. The only downside is that I go through batteries like crazy!  :)
