Elizabeth has it exactly right. I would never pick a reed based on tone! The things I look for (in this order) are:

Stability
Response
Intonation
Flexibility
Tone

NOBODY hears big differences in tone, but we are so obsessed by our sound that we hear every tiny shade, each nuance and overtone!

However, you can be sure that EVERYONE hears if you are unstable, blowing out of tune, or constantly too loud or too soft, or missing attacks on staccato passages. Think about this, next time you choose a reed!
