 tone versus comfort

So one of oboedrews comments got me thinking about how obsessed us oboists are about the tone quality. Are we really searching for a certain sound, or is it the feel? Can we as the player even recognize the difference? Of course in a perfect world, both would be right on, but hey, it's not. Anyways, here is my late night ramblings!
