The trade-off for me is not tone vs. comfort, but tone v.s control (in which is subsumed the concept of comfort to some extent). And I would always choose control. Control for me implies that I have the flexibility to create nuances, have certainty of attack and of type of attack, be able to shape a phrase, master volume and a variety of tone colors, project and fill the hall. There may be some elements of timbre which are lacking on my reeds which have better control, but the overall product is more satisfying to everyone.
