Discussion re circular breathing anyone?
See Holliger 1993 Lausanne video Mozart concerto 1st movement on www.youtube.com (search on oboe)
Somebody commented underneath by asking if Holliger knew how to circular breathe. Yes, his breath exchanges are quite frequent at rests, and noticeable, but so too are long passages played on one breath (wow!)
It didn't bother me that he wasn't circular breathing because i found it very instructive to watch a master oboist demonstrating breath technique as well as playing technique. It seemed to me he was venting at every opportunity in short rests and breath exchanging very efficiently at the end of long passages.
But the question has been asked why he didn't use circular breathing, so yes, why not?
My initial thoughts are -- maybe that technique isn't actually air efficient enough under these playing conditions? Such as standing, not sitting, projecting strongly as a soloist, playing an exuberant and energetic piece, widest compass, typical Mozart.
Also, Holliger's no longer a young man (this was 1993) so maybe even with years of experience and a body built up and conditioned for playing oboe, breathing technique has to meet changed demands of an older body?
I also thought perhaps location and air quality at that location as compared to his residential location might be an issue too.
Or, he doesn't circular breathe anyway, simple as that?
Discussion? Pros & cons circular breathing?
