I know how to circular breathe. It's really quite simple, once you understand the mechanics of what is going on.
In most cases, however, it isn't necessary to circular breathe. In fact, it usually helps the music if you find a place where it makes musical sense to breathe. Otherwise it can seem like an endless phrase - and the audience can see and hear this. Very uncomfortable. And anyway, real breathing is more reliable, and it allows the lips to refresh properly.
...Sidebar - don't rely on the circular breath. If you wake up on the morning of the concert and your nose is tickly/stuffy the circular breath is too risky to work in the heat of the moment. Imagine taking the nose inhale and then choking on your own phlegm!
Anyway, I think the reason Holliger is one of my favourite oboists, even though his tone is seen by some as too shrill (and believe me, sometimes it really grates) he is one of the few who really uses the music. Instead of having the breath rudely stuffed in between two phrases, it becomes part of the speech.
