As I recall the drill sargent's lecture, they also demonstrated the effect of holding air for just a few seconds. A really good sharp shooter shot several targets then held his breath for 10 seconds and could not hit them any more. We could see the dirt flying up near the target but he was unsteady a bit after a few second and shaking more a few seconds later.

The longer he tried while holding his breath, the worse the misses. And we are only talking 10 -20 seconds, lieing in a prone position with a log to brace the rifle.

This was a target about 1/2 a person's size from the waist up at about a 1/4 mile, with a M16 and no scope. He really could hit it directly while fresh.

BTW, I only managed to knock it down with dirt at that range from my misses, fresh or not (but it still counted as a hit because the score machine only knew if the stupid thing went down...)

The real and good lesson was in the value of keeping fresh and lots of breathing in and out is needed. Hyperventillating before a long playing stretch, as mentioned by others, is also very useful. The drill sargents never mentioned that, but then, they were not oboe players.

Learning how to do that without loooking like a Suma wrestler warming up is a little work, too. Something else to practice.
