At the John Mack camp in 1981, he did say he did not need to use it but some people do, and then before one participant's playing he mentioned for us to listen to how well this guy would double-tongue fast passages in La Mer. He also coached at least one orchestral excerpt using a reverse double-tongue, starting with 'Ku' rather than 'Tu'. So, he must have softened on the topic over the years.

On his CD, Orchestral Excerpts for Oboe, Mr.Mack mentions doing a snake tongue or double-tongue if needed, just do it so well no one notices.

After all these years, lots of double-tongue along the way, a happy side effect is the single tongue is more relaxed and considerably quicker than before.

Now and then, I can do it so no one notices except while I am warming up and doing a single to double to triple tongue exercise.

One of the things I love about listening to John Mack recordings still is he can create illusions and at times I really cannot tell if he is tongueing all notes or sluring a couple now and then. He just inflates the line and his musical statement is so strong and convincing nothing else matters.
