...yes, i used to do that with fingers, and all my teachers past and present did that, it's oboist tradition -- but there's another funky way that also works -- when reeds are already pre-wetted and then warmed enough in the mouth, they can be molded into optimum playing shape just as well by rolling over and applying lip muscle pressure -- with added benefit you can blow reed at the same time to tell when it's tamed enough, and it fits your embouchure better at the same time {:-]
at the end of playing the reverse also works ... squeeze the sides of the reed to open it up a bit so the reed doesn't dry too flat -- added benefit you have to pull corners of mouth inwards, that's welcome muscle relief indeed {:-<>
