I find it very helpful to use a "blue steel" plaque to determine tip thickness. I prefer those with rounded ends rather than pointy ones as I find them easier to insert between the blades.

Some use contour plaques. I've tried them and don't especially care for them, but I imagine it's all in what you're used to.

As far as using them to reduce openings -- I have heard others advise that you insert a plaque and press firmly at the reed base in order to reduce risk of cracking. Personally, I just grab the tip between thumb and index finger of my L hand, and squeeze back near the tube w/ my R. Obviously, the reed needs to be appropriately soaked. I can't remember the last time I lost a reed to cracking.

I saT next to someone yesterday who was using teflon plumbers tape to "train" the reed into a smaller opening. I guess she would cinch the tape down, let the reed dry, and repeat. I've never tried this, but it sounds interesting!
