Craig,
Thanx for the links to the Reedmaker videos...that's a pretty funky knife for gouging out the windows in the back...i've never seen anything like that , although one of the first handmade reeds i ever purchased had windows like that and i always wondered how they were made with a knife! At the end of the day, there are a lot of ways to skin a cat! My personal idiosyncracy is that i place the spool between my knees and wrap the string around my left pinky and its adjacent finger when i tie reeds...i maintain tension by slowly unspooling the thread as i require additional string...this works for me...why do i do this? because my teacher, a top major orchestral oboist back in the day (we're talking early '70s here) did it that way, and in the pre-internet, pre-reedmaking manual days, learning to play the oboe and make reeds was an apprenticeship, and if you were lucky, you had access to a master who could introduce you to the occult secrets of the trade. The first time i saw someone cut a length of thread and tie it to a hook or table leg, i thought, geez that's weird, and i've never tried it!
