On the subject of playing with a cracked/split reed it should only be done in an absolute dire emergency... ie. when there are not enough bars rest to change reeds... i have only seen one performer play on such a reed, and as expected you have to be pretty phenomenal to get the reed to respond let alone get a nice sound.

Such a dilemna confronted the Australian oboist, Diana Doherty at the IDRS conference in 2004. In the Bach g minor 1030b sonata, half way through the last mvt. realising the reed had trouble responding, she switched the reed round to the other side (without a crack) and pulled off the rest of the sonata with aplomb.
Even if the crack was not a huge one, It was mindblowing all the same!
Understandably she swapped reeds for the next piece! (which if i correctly recall was the Beethoven trio).
