Re: playing with a cracked reed

I read the gluing article posted in this thread, and I have to say...I agree with cjwright. I think a lot of frustration (not to mention time that could be spent doing something productive, like making a new reed, playing with the kids, baking a cake, anything) can be saved by not becoming attached to reeds. If the thing cracks, it cracks. It's really not THAT expensive to buy another reed. If for some reason it is, then it's probably time to invest in making one's own reeds. That way, the cane that gets thrown away (which is quite a bit once you get gouging your own) doesn't have any sentimental, or burdening financial, attachment. It's just scrap.
I think it also goes to say that the oboe isn't the cheapest of instruments to maintain. Eventually once all the necessary equipment is purchased, oboists don't have to spend tons of money on new mouthpieces, headjoints..etc...we can just fool around with our CHEAP reeds.
To excel in the beginning...ya just gotta have a good reliable reed! If the thing is going to crack in a concert....do you really want that?
