I had an interesting experience this morning. I was going to blend the tip into the sides a bit more on a recently made reed, and with the plaque in and a little bit of pressure with the knife, I noticed a distinct crack right down the center of one blade. The crack went at least through the heart, but not all the way to the threads. I finished my adjustment, put the reed in the oboe, and played it. It wasn't all that bad! It was a little flatter in the lower register than it had been before, but as my adjustment had effectively lengthened the tip a bit, that might have been expected even without the crack. So I'm no longer convinced that cracked reeds can't be played. I wouldn't play it in a concert, but I'm not sure it would even give me any bad habits practicing on it. I've practiced on worse uncracked reeds!
