I have had a lot of problems this winter with reeds leaking along the sides, even reeds that used to be OK. It seems to be a bigger problem with the English horn reeds for some reason. Only thing I know to do is fishskin (which I ran out of, so I had to use fingernail polish along the very edges of my EH reed to seal it! Yuk- especially if you get impatient and don't let it dry all the way before sticking it in your mouth!)
It also seems to me that the cane itself is drier, more "crackly" and not as full of vibrations as it should be. It's odd because this winter has been no colder than others (except a few weeks that were BITTER).
I know people who have whole-house humidifiers to try to counteract this, especially those with pianos. But the humidifiers are also great breeding grounds for mold and bacteria that gets spewed all over your house. Me, I'll put up with dry, flaky skin and reed issues!
