Believe it or not, I ordered a batch of 9.5-10.0 diameter gouge by mistake, and it has made very lovely winter reeds here in Philadelphia. (grimaud from Weber reeds). The only modifications I have made to my usual practices was :
1. allowing blank to dry closed (I usually do a rough scrape and clip before drying)
2. just a tiny bit of judicious "squashing" to get the opening a little more manageable.
I was pleasantly surprised (although I would strongly advise not ordering cane on-line at 3 in the morning. . . )
