i agree that you can change pitch by rolling in and out, my point is that if the reed is basically capable of playing in tune with these adjustments, there is no need for the 2nd oboist to overplay the 1st, since the whole point of the oboe tuning the orchestra is that the oboe tone is capable of piercing the veil of orchestral sound. playing a short A is obviously ok too.
